Book was written around 1902. It is a college-level history book. Surprisingly, I found it to be an interesting read and I'm not a history major. The book provides a good overview of the political climate that led to the revolution, the key players, both Patriot & British, in the conflict, and some very interesting historical side notes that that most Americans may not aware of. The book is not a fast read, but well worth the effort. I would recommend this book to anyone interested in knowing more about the American Revolution.Product details

This book really gave me a deeper understanding of the reasons for the American Revolution and the conflict between the loyalist and patriot factions.
At any other time the American Revolution would most likely have failed, because England could have employed her full military might without having to simultaneously defend against European war threats as well.
The 'school' version of the revolution never made much sense to me. I couldn't understand why or how the colonies managed to survive. This book sheds a completely different light on the revolution and one that makes sense from an analytic perspective! It fills in a lot of the "whys and hows" that enabled the colonies to win this war!
At times it reads as if written by an Englishman because of the viewpoint put forth by the author. After awhile it becomes clear that Fisher's understanding on the British Parliament and political situation makes this a very well written political history from a viewpoint not often seen by modern Americans
This great historical accounting is truly unique in a couple aspects.And it ties in with another excellent written history Ben Comee A Tale of Rogers's Rangers, 1758-59. The two are essential and inextricably linked. just like the 1st & 2nd Amendments are linked.
A riveting tale of history as normally never revealed of the times leading up and through the American Revolution from an entirely different source of historical evidence. How it is not better known is a mystery to me.
The content of the book was excellent but there were no footnotes, no listed publisher, etc. for the book I received. I assume this may reflect that the book was first published many years ago and the persons or company who printed the version of this book that I received didn't bother to include that information, if it was available.
If you have read all though school how we won our independence from England and how we where so denied so much freedom and that England took advantage of our colonies think again, if thought everybody in the colonies wanted to break away from the motherland and thought our first army represent or had a majority of middle-class fighting for good old George have you got to read this book. If thought our army of citizens where winning every battle read what really happen.
This author will give you a different view of our Revolutionary War, he has done his homework and even tho this book has been around a very long time and now released in an ebook it takes a while to understand some of his writing and does get boring in a few places with details that really doesn't matter that much but and sometimes it leads to a different view of the event. All in all I enjoyed the book and highly suggest you read it.
The book, written just after the start of the 20th Century, presents the history of the American Revolution from a very even-handed perspective, viewing it far more believable perspective than the usual rosy-colored histories of an event that ultimately played a singular role in the history of the human race. It shows the loyalists as often being less anti-American and more simply interested in maintaining some sort of relationship with the English crown. It is important to understand, as the author points out, that many of the pro-independence colonialists, who represented a decided minority of the population within the 13 colonies, were committed to independence as far back as the early 1760s, and the events between the French and Indian Wars and the War for Independence, such as the Stamp Act and Tea Act, which for all practical purposes were not very oppressive, were used by them as excuses to build support for their cause, and in fact the colonialists had achieved the goal set out by them as required to prevent a revolution, and Great Britain met all of the demands in the Declaration of Independence, by three years prior to the end of hostilities.
A great example of the uniqueness of the book can be found in how the author described Benedict Arnold. Too often, Arnold is described as a fierce patriot who fought brilliantly under awful odds during the attack on Quebec, and then again heroically at the Battle of Saratoga, both of which are true. But too often Arnold is shown as a victim of the machinations against him in the Continental Congress, which he was except for the fact he was by far not the only such victim. It delves into Arnold's long-held Tory beliefs and the greed and resentment that drove him to becoming the classical traitor in the eyes of Americans even until modern times. Arnold planned for a long time to betray the colonial cause, and convinced Washington to give him the perfect opportunity to do so by seeking the appointment to West Point.
If you are dedicated to learning as much as possible about American history and the history of the revolutionary period, this book is a good read. It is written in the vernacular of 100 years ago, and it is quite dry. A good read for those who meet that description.
