What a missed opportunity. I wish the author had taken time to write an actual book about the American Indian tribes that were here at the dawn of what would eventually be the U.S. There are great pictures in here, but very little words. What is written tells you basically nothing except a cute little fact about that particular tribe. I homeschool a first grader and this book did nothing for us. She was very disappointed that it didn't teach us about the tribes. The pictures left her with dozens of questions that we had no answer to without further research. You know, the kind of info one would expect in a history book. The word history in the title is very misleading because there is no history presented in this book.
This book is presented as though it is a first grade curriculum and it is just a short picture book. It is better suited for a two year old. I would say three, but my three year old also was disappointed by how lacking this book was. I would love to find a book that lives up to the concept and title of this book.

1st Grade United States History Early American Settlers First Grade Books Children American History Books edition by Baby Professor Arts Photography eBooks Reviews

I have purchased a variety of books from this author to use in an elementary general education setting. I really enjoy how the language of the book is targeted at the specific age range that the book is stated for. The book covers a variety of Native Americans tribes throughout the United States history by using both text that is readable to the targeted age and also pictures that are suitable for the targeted age. One thing I have found with these books is that they are also great resources to use in an elementary special education setting. The material is presented in a way that I feel can easily be transferred between classroom settings. This specific book is targeted at the first grade students, but could easily be adapted to use in kindergarten and even some in a second grade classroom. The tribes that are covered in this text are the Apache tribe, the Cherokee, the Blackfoot and the Cheyenne. The book uses both a combination of black and white images and colored images to portray various aspects of each tribe. The images used in the book also ranged from a variety of time periods. This book overall is a good introduction to talking about Native American tribes, but does not offer a lot of details about each tribe. This book would definitely need to be accompanied with other material if wanting to do a whole unit on Native American tribes. I was able to receive this for free or at a discounted rate in exchange for an honest review.
As with most eBooks of this type, this one depicts Native Americans in a way which quickly introduces them to young readers. It really doesn't stand on its own, but can be used to peak interest into further study. The pictures in it are great and do encourage more investigation.

However, I can't rate this one very highly because I think the facts are too shallow and haphazard. They focus on four, albeit primary, tribes the Apache, Cherokee, Blackfoot and Cheyenne. The book lists a fact or two about each, but several are stated as if that tribe were the only one this fact applied to when in fact that was true of most Native Americans. There also happens to be a grammatical error on page 10 “The Cherokee Indians are largest tribe in the United States.” While it may sound like the author was trying to mimic the broken English of most TV depictions of “Indians” I don’t think this was intentional.

I’ll also put out there that “Indian” is thrown around a lot in this book. At one point, “American Indian” is used. I’m not “offended” at all by this, but I do see it as being an inaccurate classification. When Columbus landed, he thought he had arrived in India (a common term of the day for all of Asia), so when he encountered the native people, he assumed they were Indians. This was quickly cleared up in the coming years, but the term stuck, and it stuck long enough to make it into TV Westerns, where it was cemented into US culture.

Still, this ebook does accurately depict a culture different from that of most others out there, which should encourage further interest in most young readers.

Disclaimer I received this ebook in exchange for my honest review.
I think it is important to learn about other demographics that my children do nit encounter every day. I love using our homeschool time to do this. My kindergarten son was so attentive during this book and was intrigued by the differences of tribes. I even caught my older children listening.

This book includes a basic knowledge of 4 tribes Apache, Cherokee, Blackfoot and Cheyenne. It includes a basic introduction page that introduces the idea of tribes. Then it follows the same pattern of 1 picture pertaining to the tribe along with an introduction of a couple of sentences. The next page is a full page picture also pertainin to the tribe. Then the 3rd page is another picture with another short snippet of information about the tribe. Then it goes to the next tribe. The information included is very age appropriate for a 1st grader and sparks and interest.

The pictures in this book are very well done. Expect lots of head dresses as that seems to be a distinguishing mark of all the tribal pictures. My son really enjoyed the picture of the decorative drawings on their hands (as shown in the picture).

I received this e-book for free in exchange for my honest review. This incentive did not affect my review of this e-book.
